Abstract

This article presents a literature review and data showing that during aging, the intensity of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation exceeds the antioxidant defense capacity of structural skin components—the stratum corneum, epidermis, and dermis. ROS are shown to be involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory processes and allergic reactions in the skin. The role of ROS and antioxidant systems in cellular responses associated with MAP kinase activity in the skin is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the effects of UV radiation on the skin, including its genotoxic, immunosuppressive, and carcinogenic effects.
